Man killed by plumber who tried to rob jewellery

KOLKATA: A 56-year-old resident of Gagan Sarkar Road in Beliaghata was allegedly murdered after her attacker tried to loot her jewellery. The accused, a plumber identified as Bapi, was handed over to the cops who started a case under multiple IPC sections.The victim, Ava Saha, worked in a lamp factory. "Normally, the main gate of her house is locked while the door is kept ajar," said Sabita Basu, the victim's next door neighbour. "Around 2.30am on Sunday, I heard some groans from her room. Suddenly, she shouted for help. Me and my brother Biswajit rushed out, but found the door locked from outside," Basu said. Biswajit reportedly broke the door down to find Saha lying in the bed with a man leaning over her. "I locked the door from outside and asked locals to come and help," he said.Locals claimed Saha always wore heavy gold jewellery and would never pay any heed to warnings.In another incident, a girl aged between 15 and 16 was found unconscious near the embankment of Nalban under Kolkata Leather Complex police station area on Monday evening. She was immediately taken to Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Preliminary investigation revealed that she was strangulated with a dupatta . "We are yet to identify the cause of death. A probe has been started," an officer said.
