(Express photo byy Subham Dutta) The state government is set shift inmates from the 112-year-old Alipore Correctional Home to a new facility in Baruipur which is to be inaugurated tomorrow. Sources said around 700 inmates, 200 convicts and 500 undertrials will be shifted in the first phase. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to inaugurate the Tangtala-based correctional home, with modern facilities, from Nabanna via remote control. “Tomorrow, the Baruipur correctional home will be inaugurated. The shifting will start soon and inmates will be shifted phase-wise. The upgraded correctional home has different layers of security and modern infrastructure,” Jail Minister Ujjawal Biswas told The Indian Express. When asked about the future of the historic Alipore Correctional Home, Biswas said, “That the government will decide. We will definitely put it to some use.” More than 4,000 inmates can be housed in the cells in the new facility, sources said, adding it will be painted blue-and-white unlike its red-coloured predecessor. In January this year, three undertrial Bangladeshi inmates had escaped from Alipore Correctional Home. Three warders were suspended following the incident and a departmental inquiry was initiated. Keeping such incidents in mind, government officials said security at the Baruipur facility will be multi-layered and all modern equipment will be used to ensure an international-standard security system. “A high wall surrounds the complex, with watchtowers and CCTV cameras. Laser technology will also be used for security,” said an official. The inmates will also have a better environment: a playing field, a gym, a vocational training centre, a hospital, a well-equipped modern kitchen and a large auditorium for cultural programs have been included in the facility, said sources. Officials said the value of the plot where the home was constructed is valued at around Rs 96o0 crore, while the project cost an estimated Rs 250 crore. The Alipore Women’s Correctional Home and Presidency Correctional Home may also be shifted out from the city soon, said sources. The present Alipore Correctional Home has a registered capacity of 1,971 inmates. It is located on the other side of the canal known as Tolly nullah, just beside Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence. As per sources, the state government has planned for development of Alipore which is likely to boost the real estate market in the area. For all the latest Kolkata News, download Indian Express App
