Help arrested for theft at South City

Kolkata: A 47-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday for allegedly committing theft at an apartment in the South City residential complex.Shila Mahato had been working for South City resident Shobha Banerjee, 75, for a few years.Banerjee is a resident of tower II of the residential complex. Over the years, Mahato gained her employer’s trust.It was after Durga Puja that Banerjee started suspecting Mahato. But Mahato was tracked down soon,” said a police officer.On Saturday night, cops arrested Mahato from her Gobindo Bose Lane residence in Kalighat . She stayed alone at the flat since the death of her husband.She had engaged Mahato, who used to stay over at the flat. Later, when she started calculating, the 75-year-old realised that Rs 70,000 and two pairs of gold earrings were missing.

Over the years, Mahato gained her employer’s trust.It was after Durga Puja that Banerjee started suspecting Mahato. Earlier this month, the latter informed Banerjee that she wanted to go home and asked for a few days’ leave.While Mahato was on leave, Banerjee was cleaning her cupboard on November 11 when she found some cash missing. Later, when she started calculating, the 75-year-old realised that Rs 70,000 and two pairs of gold earrings were missing. She decided to inform cops.Based on her complaint, Jadavpur police station lodged a complaint on Friday and started probing the case. “The septuagenarian was very worried as she stays alone in the flat. But Mahato was tracked down soon,” said a police officer.On Saturday night, cops arrested Mahato from her Gobindo Bose Lane residence in Kalighat . Rs 25,600 and a pair of earrings were recovered from her. During interrogation, she confessed to the theft. She was produced at a city court on Sunday and was sent to police custody till November 20.A senior Kolkata Police officer said: “Setting up CCTV cameras inside the flats can be useful, especially when the residents are senior citizens. Elderly people are quite vulnerable to such crimes. Address verification is also crucial. One can even send a small amount of money to the given address through money order and get the order confirmed.”
