KOLKATA: In a bid to save her ailing mother's life, a 23 year-old woman on Tuesday donated a portion of her liver to her.Devi Ghosh (43) underwent a liver transplant surgery at SSKM’s School of Liver and Digestive Diseases (SDLD).The Basirhat resident has been suffering from cirrhosis of liver for over a year. As the disease progressed, doctors said a liver transplant surgery could only bring her about. Accordingly, SSKM had even offered her the organ about a month back.“But the daughter insisted that she be the donor herself and we had to give in to her wishes and emotions. So we retrieved a part of the daughters liver and transplanted it into her mother. So far both of them are doing well,” said Dr Abhijit Chowdury, hepatology head at SDLD.Unlike other organs, in liver transplants, only a portion of the donor’s liver is required for the process.SDLD had created history in eastern India in April 2009 when it carried out the first liver transplant surgery in the region on Roushan Ali, a seven-month-old boy with his father Rajab Ali being the donor. Since then, the unit has conducted eight liver transplant surgeries with the help of four living donor and an equal number of deceased donation.“The organ transplant ambience in the state is being postured by the spate of deceased organ donations. Our team of surgeons is getting more confident while people who were bypassing the state seeking transplant surgeries in other cities are coming back to us,” said Chowdhury. The last liver transplant from living donation at SSKM was in November 2015. Doctors are hopeful of more such surgeries as the culture of organ donation picks up pace in the state.
