Schools tweak exam timings for twice-a-year JEE

KOLKATA: City schools have tweaked their pre-board examination schedule for Class XII students to allow them to appear in the twice-a-year national entrance tests for engineering and medical. While JEE (Mains) will be held in January and April from 2019 itself, NEET will be held in May this year and will adopt the twice-a-year format from 2020.The first JEE Mains has already been conducted this month and the second test is scheduled in April. The January JEE Mains prompted most premier city schools to rework their pre-boards time-table for Class XII students. The others are likely to follow an altered schedule from the next session (2019-2020).Principal Sujoy Biswas of Rammohan Mission School, where the pre-board examination is currently on, said: “We have considered the JEE-Mains exam schedule and then drawn up our time table so that the students of Class XII are not inconvenienced in any way.”“This is the first year so this arrangement had to be made in a short time. From the next academic session, we will hold the pre-boards for Class XII in December so that the students can take the JEE Mains exams with a free mind,” Biswas added.Don Bosco School, Park Circus, advanced its pre-board exam considering the new entrance exam pattern. “This year Class XII students completed their pre-board exam in December,” said principal Fr. Bikash Mondal.At Modern High School for Girls, the pre-board physics and chemistry exams for Class XII students will be conducted separately for nine students who appeared in the JEE-Mains. “Our pre-board schedule was drawn up keeping in mind the national entrance tests. Hence, both mathematics and fourth elective subject tests were held much before the JEE aspirants got down to serious preparations to crack the entrance tests,” said principal Damayanti Mukherjee.Calcutta Boys School, too, brought forward its pre-boards in view of the national tests. “We were supposed to hold the pre-board exams for Class XII in January. But we rescheduled and held it in December,” principal Raja McGee said.South Point High School ensured that students taking the national tests are not burdened.“We made sure that those appearing for the national entrance examinations are not made to take any school tests during the period,” principal, Rupa Sanyal Bhattacharyya said.“Usually, the school holds special classes and two practice tests for Class XII CBSE students. But since it will be difficult for all science students to do so this time, wehave not held the second practice test this year,” she added.La Martiniere School for Boys has not yet changed their exam schedule this year. “Some subject papers have been held in December as we began our pre-boards while a few remaining examinations were held after January 14. However, keeping in mind the national entrance examination schedule, we may consider an alteration to our exam time table for ISC aspirants from next session,” said La Martiniere School for Boys principal John Rafi.
