KOLKATA: Actor Kamal Haasan , who last year launched his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, will campaign for the Trinamool Congress candidate at the Andamans on April 6.The Tamil superstar’s party has forged an alliance with Trinamool Congress at the islands’ sole Lok Sabha seat, from where the BJP’s Bishnu Pada Ray is the incumbent MP. Trinamool has fielded Ayan Mondal from the seat.Haasan had an hour-long meeting with Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, the seat of the Bengal secretariat, on Monday on how to take forward the alliance.Banerjee confirmed her party’s poll alliance with Haasan’s. “We are proud to have Makkal Needhi Maiam as an ally of the Trinamool in the Andamans,” she said.Banerjee said it was discussed that the superstar will hold a rally in the Andamans on April 6 in support of Mondal. Sujit Bose, Bengal’s fire services minister, will also attend the rally on Trinamool’s behalf, she added.Haasan said he came down to Kolkata to seek Banerjee’s blessings, with whom he shares an “excellent relationship”, and confirmed that he would be going to the Andamans on April 6. He informed that his party was contesting 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. “Our opposition parties are AIADMK, DMK and BJP.”Haasan said he saw support for Trinamool in the Andamans necessary because he was new to politics, his party was regional and also because there were a lot of similarities between Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Bengal. It might be recalled that after Bengali and Hindi, Tamil is most widely spoken language in the islands.The Trinamool candidate is the grandson of Manoranjan Bhakta, who was MP of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 1977 to 1999 and again from 2004 to 2009. Bhakta’s daughter, Anita Mondal, had contested the LS polls in 2014 from the same seat, but lost to BJP.
