Dry spell to end this week in Kolkata, predicts Met

Even as the monsoon rain has been lashing north Bengal, south Bengal has been left deprived of rain.

KOLKATA: The city can expect an end to the dry run by Thursday, predicts the Met office . A cyclonic circulation is likely to form by July 24, triggering rain thereafter. If the cyclonic circulation transforms into a low pressure area, the rainfall activity could be intense.

"All these days the monsoon flow has been weak in southern Bengal . But we are expecting a turnaround by mid-week. We expect normal monsoon between July 25 and 31," said GK Das, director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.

Even as the monsoon rain has been lashing north Bengal, south Bengal has been left deprived of rain. July and August are the peak monsoon months. But with only a week left for July to end, apart from few scattered spells of rain, the city has not seen any monsoon rain this July.

"We are expecting a cyclonic circulation by July 24. In that case we expect a rainfall activity from the next day. This system, however, may not intensify into a low pressure area. But it will be potent enough to trigger normal monsoon rain," added Das.

A low pressure of a depression are weather systems that often form during monsoon, triggering widespread and heavy rain. But such systems have been eluding the city. In the absence of rain, the mercury has been refusing to go below the normal mark.

In fact, on July 15, it shot up to 37.7°C mark, making it the hottest July in a decade.Though mercury has not risen up further, with both the maximum and minimum temperature remaining well above the normal mark, the city has been reeling under extremely discomfort weather. Met office expects the maximum temperature to hover around 35°C-36°C mark for now. On Sunday, the city recorded 35.5°C, which was three notches above normal.

The south west monsoon arrived almost two weeks behind schedule this year. The delayed arrival and scanty rain has added to the rainfall deficit."With barely any significant rain in July this year, Kolkata currently suffers a rainfall deficit or around 65%," said Das.
