Kolkata: The Union Home ministry has decided to provide Z category security to Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. On Thursday, the Director General (DG) of West Bengal Police was informed about the development. This is the first time in the history of the country that a Governor is getting protection by the Central Reserved Police Force (CRPF) instead of security by the state police force. According to sources, following the Red Road Puja Carnival, a controversy erupted over the comments by the Governor mentioning that he felt humiliated. Dhankhar also raised questions regarding the prevailing law and order situation in the state. Days after his comments, the decision of refusing state police cover and getting Z category security by CRPF has again started another row. It may be mentioned that Dhankhar will not only get the CRPF cover in Bengal but the protection will also be extended to him throughout the country. Bengal BJP leaders had requested the Union Home ministry to provide CRPF protection to the Governor. Earlier, Dhankhar himself criticised the actions of the state police after he "rescued" Union minister Babul Supriyo from Jadavpur University. Few days later, while reacting on the triple murder at Jiaganj in Murshidabad, he again slammed the state police and alleged that the law and order situation in Bengal was in a mess. According to the norms, from now on, Governor of Bengal will be protected by Commandos and CRPF personnel. CRPF officials have already visited Raj Bhavan and have also spoken with the officials there.
