Bengal witnesses 83 rise in vehicle sales in September amid nationwide slump

Kolkata: At a time when the automobile industry across the country has been witnessing a slump in sales, Bengal has seen an increase of 83 percent in vehicle sales in the month of September compared to last year. Bengal, as per figures, has been witnessing a rise in car sales right from the month of June this year. The sales of two-wheelers and three-wheelers have nearly doubled, while the passenger car sales have increased by 13 percent. The scenario in the state is in sharp contrast to the data for the month of September in the country, where passenger vehicle sales have plunged by 23.69 percent and commercial vehicle sales have seen a decline of 62.11 percent. According to SIAM data, passenger vehicle sales have dropped to 2,23,317 units in September from 2,92,660 a year ago, while passenger car sales have dropped by 33.4 percent to 1,31,281 units compared to the same period in 2018.

As per recent statistics released by The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), car dealers in the state have sold 1,09,734 vehicles in September that include two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, buses, commercial vehicles and passenger cars. The number of such vehicles sold in September 2018 was 59,814. Bengal, as per figures, has been witnessing a rise in car sales right from the month of June this year. The sales of two-wheelers and three-wheelers have nearly doubled, while the passenger car sales have increased by 13 percent. The scenario in the state is in sharp contrast to the data for the month of September in the country, where passenger vehicle sales have plunged by 23.69 percent and commercial vehicle sales have seen a decline of 62.11 percent. According to SIAM data, passenger vehicle sales have dropped to 2,23,317 units in September from 2,92,660 a year ago, while passenger car sales have dropped by 33.4 percent to 1,31,281 units compared to the same period in 2018. The data further shows that total passenger vehicle production has declined by over 18 percent to 2,79,644 units in September, compared to the figure of 3,41,539 units in September last year. The total production of commercial vehicles, meanwhile, has dropped by 72.07 percent in September against the same period last year. SIAM – a non-profit apex national body, represents all major vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers in India. It works towards supporting sustainable development of the Indian automobile industry, with the vision of India emerging as the destination of choice in the world for design and manufacture of automobiles. It may be mentioned that in the last few months, all the major players in the automobile sector have been witnessing reasonable decline in sales, which has even contributed to job losses. The sector employs 3.5 crore people directly and indirectly, who have been facing serious trouble due to the slump.
