Kolkata: Students from non-film background have come up with a film on what Calcutta used to be 100 years ago. The film was screened at the 25th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). "The Earliest Settlers of Calcutta -The Mullicks of Pathuriaghata is our first movie. The 22.29 minute film was screened at 25th KIFF on Sunday. Shooting the movie was difficult for us because we are finance students and not media students. We learnt the art bit by bit. We thank all the team members for the cooperation and coordination," said Poulomee Auddy, director of the documentary film. The film depicts the glorious past of "The Mullicks of Pathuriaghata" who were acclaimed for establishing businesses across India and to various European countries. The shooting was done at 67, Pathuriaghata Street that reveals the tales of its rich culture and heritage. "One important reason we made this movie is that we need to document it for the next generation and the forthcoming generation of Kolkata. The grandeur of the Pathuriaghata Mullicks is fading with time. It holds the history of their ancestors who contributed immensely in writing the golden era of Bengal," said Atreyee Basak, co-director of the film, who was a finance student. The golden era of Calcutta is mostly looked-upon for its cultural renaissance, intellects to overcome social stigmas, sharp political insights and educational excellence of the Bengalis during the British period. "We mostly fail to recognize the communitys business acumen that had once helped Calcutta to become one of the most acclaimed business hubs during the early 18th century," pointed out Basak. The eight-day 25th KIFF was inaugurated on November 8 at Netaji Indoor Stadium. Fifty-six foreign film personalities from 24 countries and 60 film personalities from India will be participating as filmmakers and speakers on various important sections (competition and non-competition). At least 214 feature films and 152 short and documentary films (shortlisted from 2,492 entries) from 76 countries will be screened at 17 venues throughout Kolkata.
