Kolkata: Fair price shops across the city will sell onions from Monday to make the vegetable available to the common people at a reasonable price.
In Tamil Nadu and Madurai onion was sold for over Rs 200 per kg, while in Kolkata, the price touched Rs 150.
"We are starting with the marginal ration (MR) shops or fair price shops in Kolkata tomorrow.
"We wholeheartedly laud the decision of the state government to distribute onions from fair price shops of Kolkata at a heavily subsidised retail price.
The state government will give 100 kg of onion for sale to each fair price shop in Kolkata," said Biswambhar Basu, general secretary of All India Fair Price Shop Dealers Federation.
