Kolkata: Bangladeshi gang of pickpockets nabbed

KOLKATA: The watch section of detective department has nabbed a gang from Bangladesh that would come to Kolkata on valid passports to Kolkata and carry out daring pickpockets in the central commercial zone of India. On March 17, the gang had targeted another victim at Shakespeare Sarani. We want to ascertain if the gang was involved in similar incidents even in Bangladesh," said joint CP (crime) Vishal Garg. "The gang used only blades to cut the pockets of their victims inside crowded buses or areas. A third accused, An Indian residing in Metiabruz who acted as their local guide has also been arrested.

KOLKATA: The watch section of detective department has nabbed a gang from Bangladesh that would come to Kolkata on valid passports to Kolkata and carry out daring pickpockets in the central commercial zone of India. The arrests were carried out from near Indian Museum on Tuesday night.The accused had claimed before police that they had chosen Kolkata as a target since it yielded higher profits - the introduction of Rs 2000 notes meant there was more cash in the pocket. A third accused, An Indian residing in Metiabruz who acted as their local guide has also been arrested. Two pickpocketing incident - one worth Rs 1,10,000 at Dalhousie inside a minibus and another worth Rs 60,000 in the Shakespeare Sarani area has been solved.According to the police, the accused have been identified as Mohd Ripon Rahaman (47) - a resident of Mymensinh in Bangladesh - and Mohd Hurmuz (50) - a resident of Jamalpur, also in Bangladesh. The local conduit has been identified as Proloy Das."The gang used only blades to cut the pockets of their victims inside crowded buses or areas. The accused had pickpocketed Rs 1.10 lakh from one Md Makim while he was coming in a minibus from Howrah to Canning Street on Tuesday morning. On March 17, the gang had targeted another victim at Shakespeare Sarani. We have taken all the three accused into police custody till March 31. We want to ascertain if the gang was involved in similar incidents even in Bangladesh," said joint CP (crime) Vishal Garg.
