Patiala residents protest against drug smugglers, attacked

PATIALA: Amidst claims by the Punjab government to crackdown on drug smugglers, some residents of Rorhi Kutt Mohalla in Patiala have levelled the allegations against the police of being in connivance with drug smugglers and shielding them.The residents claimed that they were attacked for protesting against the alleged smugglers. "Only three days ago these smugglers, who supply smack to number of youth in the colony, had attacked a woman who had raised her voice against them. He added that a case would be registered after statements of the victims were recorded. Following this, some residents again protested against these smugglers on Monday resulting in attack on one of the protester," said, a resident.The station house officer (SHO) of Kotwali Patiala has refuted allegations of the residents and said the matter was being probed. The police did not registered a case against the accused and instead asked the woman to go back or she would be herself booked for the supply of contraband.

According to them, they had launched a protest against the alleged drug suppliers in the colony three days ago following which the accused had first assaulted a woman and then a man, whose brother was also a drug addict.The residents in Rorhi Kutt Mohalla alleged that they were attacked by the smugglers following which they had lodged a complaint with the police, but the cops did not take any action against the accused and rather threatened them.On Monday, a man raised his voice against some men in his colony who, he claimed, were supplying drugs.He claimed his brother was an addict and had got treatment twice from a de-addiction centre but he again got involved with drugs because of these peddlers."Only three days ago these smugglers, who supply smack to number of youth in the colony, had attacked a woman who had raised her voice against them.
