Water logging creates chaos, schools closed

Students and teachers were stranded at several places as Tuesday saw the one of the worst cases of water logging. LUDHIANA: After Ludhiana woke up to yet another day of relentless downpour, flooded streets and waterlogged roads prompted few schools to declare holiday on Tuesday. School peons were seen helping pedestrians on water-logged streets.Schools at BRS Nagar and Sarabha Nagar remained closed due to the erratic weather conditions.

LUDHIANA: After Ludhiana woke up to yet another day of relentless downpour, flooded streets and waterlogged roads prompted few schools to declare holiday on Tuesday. At 0.8 mm, it is the highest rainfall of the season so far in 24 hours, the meteorological department officials said.School buses were seen stuck in long jams. Videos of waterlogging in several low-lying areas such as BRS Nagar, Sarabha Nagar and Ferozpur Road were shared on social media. Students those who took their private vehicle to school were sent back. Students and teachers were stranded at several places as Tuesday saw the one of the worst cases of water logging. School peons were seen helping pedestrians on water-logged streets.Schools at BRS Nagar and Sarabha Nagar remained closed due to the erratic weather conditions. Principals have been instructed by the authorities to take a call on school closure gauging waterlogging in adjacent areas.While the schools remained closed for the students, teachers have been told to be present despite heavy downpour and water logged streets.A teacher from a school situated at BRS Nagar, on condition of anonymity, said , ‘We are not allowed to come in school buses so we have to take our private vehicles. It is difficult for us to commute as roads have potholes where the ride becomes scary and dangerous. We can’t see potholes while driving as they are filled with water. the school authorities should look after our concerns as well.”Rehaina Bansal , mother of a 6-year-old, said, “Driving on Ludhiana roads on Tuesday was a harrowing experience as heavy rainfall along with poor visibility caused snarls. Parents were seen wading through knee-deep water. The schools should have declared a holiday beforehand as the weather condition was not good.”Deputy commissioner Pardeep Agarwal said, “Ludhiana got a widespread downpour as the rainfall escalated. No such orders have been issued by the administration for closure of schools due to heavy rainfall. The school authorities have taken such initiatives on their own.”
