Canada refuses AAP MLA entry over molestation charges

The case against the AAP MLA was registered by the Ropar police in July last year on complaint of Tarminder Kaur, who had rented her house to him in October 2016.The Ropar MLA and Kotkapura’s AAP legislator Kultar Singh Sandhwan were travelling together on a private visit to Canada . According to sources, Sandoa and Kultar had gone to visit the latter’s sister, who lives in Ottawa. The complainant, who could not be identified, had warned the Canadian immigration authorities that the AAP MLA was facing criminal charges in his home country and should not be allowed to enter Canada.When the two AAP legislators landed at Ottawa airport, they were approached by the immigration authorities. Sandoa was escorted to the immigration office where he was questioned for 25 minutes over the charges framed against him in the Punjab court.Kultar was allowed entry to the country, but he decided to return to India with Sandoa. PATIALA: The Canadian immigration authorities on Sunday refused entry to Punjab Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amarjit Singh Sandoa , against whom charges of molestation, assault and criminal intimidation were framed by a court in Ropar on Friday, after detailed questioning at the Ottawa airport.The court in Ropar had framed charges of molestation, criminal intimidation, outraging modesty of a woman, uttering obscene words, and voluntarily causing hurt against Sandoa on Friday. The case against the AAP MLA was registered by the Ropar police in July last year on complaint of Tarminder Kaur, who had rented her house to him in October 2016.The Ropar MLA and Kotkapura’s AAP legislator Kultar Singh Sandhwan were travelling together on a private visit to Canada . According to sources, Sandoa and Kultar had gone to visit the latter’s sister, who lives in Ottawa. The AAP’s Toronto unit had also lined up a few programmes for the two Punjab legislators.The AAP convener in Toronto, Surinder Singh Mawi, confirmed that both Sandoa and Kultar had boarded a flight back to India after objections were raised by the Canadian immigration authorities. The sources said Kultar’s relatives, who had come to receive the two MLAs, were not allowed to meet them while Sandoa was being questioned by the immigration authorities.No official confirmation about the AAP MLA not allowed entry was available either from the ministry of external affairs in India or the Indian high commission in Canada.A formal complaint had been emailed to the Canadian authorities along with the court documents linked to charges framed against Sandoa in the July 2017 case, according to the sources. The complainant, who could not be identified, had warned the Canadian immigration authorities that the AAP MLA was facing criminal charges in his home country and should not be allowed to enter Canada.When the two AAP legislators landed at Ottawa airport, they were approached by the immigration authorities. Both the AAP MLAs have boarded a flight to Delhi that will land early on Monday morning.The AAP’s Punjab co-convener, Dr Balbir Singh when contacted said he was not in a position to either confirm or deny whether the MLA had been deported from Canada. He said complete details of what had transpired in Canada would only be clear after the two MLAs reach India.The Ropar court had on Friday granted Sandoa permission to visit Canada, but had asked him to deposit a surety bond of Rs 4 lakh and ordered him to personally attend the next hearing of the case on August 21.The complainant, Tarminder Kaur alleged that the MLA had rented her house in Ropar’s Zial Singh Nagar for Rs 30,000 per month, excluding electricity and water bills and any damage to property. When Sandhoa left her house, he failed to clear rent for one month and when she asked him clear his dues, he intimidated her, yelled foul words at her and assaulted her, due to which she fell on the floor.The police had registered the case under Sections 354, 294, 506, 509, and 323 of the Indian Penal Code against the legislator. After the Ropar police filed a challan in the court of chief judicial magistrate Pooja Angodra, the AAP legislator had filed an application seeking re-investigation along with narco and brain mapping tests, however his plea was rejected by the court.
