EcoSikh stresses on nurturing nature for a better Punjab

LUDHIANA: A state-level volunteer induction gathering meet was organised by the Washington-based EcoSikh Club at Gurdwara Sarabha Nagar on Sunday. The purpose behind this meeting was to increase and educate a network of environmental leaders from across the state, those can fight for the betterment of state, while maintaining the ecological balance. More than 100 volunteers from across the state took part in the three-hour training session supervised by the best state-level environmentalists and entrepreneurs.During the session, environmentalists across the state threw light on the environmental urgency of Punjab and well-planned strategy to engage different communities via awareness campaign. They asked all to reduce air pollution and strengthen their technical skills to conduct volunteer plantations throughout the state under global campaign of 550 Rukh Guru De Naam.Dr Lakhewali, an environmentalist, delivered a technical session about selection of trees for variety of locations like —plantations under electric wires, across roads, near ponds. Special stress was put on two-year planning of nurturing and maintenance of the trees.EcoSikh south Asia project manager, Ravneet Singh, expressed his satisfaction over state-wide plantation drive which will be carried out in upcoming days to reduce the level of air pollution. He said the volunteers should be created awareness on the perspective of how common people can utilize government schemes, get plants, daily labour for free to execute plantation and maintenance of trees in villages through MGNREGA and other government schemes.“The entire planet and especially Punjab is under environmental crises,” said Ravneet Singh. “Our forest cover is less than 4% and the very basic solution is plantation. Guru Nanak has laid a clear cut path for us to protect nature. We just need to join hands and make the earth liveable again,” he added.It is to be notified that EcoSikh recently gave a call to Sikh community worldwide to commemorate the 550th Gurpurb , the birthday of Guru Nanak in 2019, by planting 1 million trees at 1,820 locations worldwide.
