HK theft: Nabha jailbreak plotter Romi acquitted

The close associate of slain gangsters Vicky Gounder and Prema Lahoria had facilitated the Nabha jailbreak by providing funds and later helping the escaped inmates coordinate their movements by individually staying in touch with them through internet telephony. Romi along with his flatmate Dilpreet Singh, 24, was acquitted by the court and one Gursewak Singh was found guilty of handling the stolen items worth HK$3 million. The quantum of the sentence will be pronounced on September 18. The next hearing in the extradition case is on September 13.The Indian authorities served a provisional warrant for Romi’s arrest in June and made a formal request for his surrender on August 22.On June 26, the HK prosecution had dropped charges against Romi in the 450 million Japanese yen ($4.04 million) heist. Gursewak had been arrested in February with a stolen suitcase, but Romi and Dilpreet were arrested later and the prosecution could not prove charges against them.“No further charges are pending against him in the local (Hong Kong) courts, and if Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor gives the green light, the extradition proceedings will continue,” an online report in the South China Morning Post said.Romi, who was born in Bhinderkhurad village of Dharamkot tehsil in Moga, had fled to Hong Kong, where he has permanent residency, in June 2016 after jumping bail.
