Six injured in clash between student unions

PATIALA: About six students were injured in a clash between two student unions on Tuesday night during the ongoing protest by the university girls hostel over their demand to extend the entry timings of the hostel. After this, the armed men attacked the male students accompanying the protesting girls”, said, DSO leader Gagandeep Kaur.Captain Gurtej Singh, security-in-charge was not available for comments. Instead of calling his security guards of the university to stop the men carrying iron and wooden rods, the security in-charge asked the girls to rush inside the VC office. The police claimed only two were injured whereas the protesting student union has claimed four protestors were injured and were refused treatment.Supporting the girl’s demand over hostel timings, the democratic student organisation (DSO) had announced to stage protest against the university authorities around ten days ago while on Tuesday morning the union leaders nitiated a signature campaign in the hostels.The DSO leaders claimed that over 2,000 students had signed on the first-day campaign that included demands of revoking the recent decision of hiked fees, assigning of nonteaching posts to only nonteaching staff and others besides the hostel timing extension demand.However, as part of their protest the students, mostly girls, on late Tuesday evening took out a march inside the university campus but on their way, some students allegedly of students association of punjab (SAP) eve-teased some girls following which the girls and boys thrashed the eve-teasers.“The role of university authorities is suspected behind the incident as the security in-charge of the university, who was present near the protest site, came towards the girls sitting on a protest.
