LUDHIANA: The police on Tuesday detained a Chandigarh Road resident after he tried to get a cellphone financed on a fake ID proof . He asked to get it financed and his application was put up, but it was rejected. On Tuesday, he again came to my shop and asked to put up his application to another finance company. When they stopped giving instalments, he tried to trace them and found their addresses fake. Smelling a rat, I asked him who had sent him to purchase the phone.

LUDHIANA: The police on Tuesday detained a Chandigarh Road resident after he tried to get a cellphone financed on a fake ID proof . The police are suspecting involvement of a gang as a number of mobile store owners have complained that some customers got android phones financed on fake ID proofs and later did not pay the EMIs.Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Satnam Singh said Prempreet Singh, owner of a mobile store at Jamalpur Chowk, called them up after a youth came to buy a phone on loan on a fake ID proof.Prempreet, owner of Gurukirpa Mobile Store, said, “The 18-year-old youth, a resident of Chandigarh Road, came to my shop on Monday and chose a phone of Rs 20,000. He asked to get it financed and his application was put up, but it was rejected. On Tuesday, he again came to my shop and asked to put up his application to another finance company. Smelling a rat, I asked him who had sent him to purchase the phone. On this, he said a man named Sunny, a resident of Kohara, had asked him to get a phone and he had promised him a commission of Rs 3,000 on the purchase. The youth said Sunny had given the fake ID proof to him.”Prempreet then called up the police, who took the youth in custody.“My friend Manvinder Singh, who also owns a mobile store at 33 Feet Road, had told me weeks ago that seven to eight people duped him by getting expensive phones financed on fake ID proofs. When they stopped giving instalments, he tried to trace them and found their addresses fake. Suspecting the youth to be a part of the same game, I alerted the police,” Prempreet added.Police said the gang further sold the cellphones on OLX.The ASI said, “We have received a complaint. Raids are being conducted to nab Sunny. An FIR will be lodged after his arrest, which will make things clear.”
