LUDHIANA: The general body elections for city's prestigious Lodhi Club will be held on 17th February. The decision was taken by deputy commissioner Pradeep Agrawal on Monday who is the president of the club which has close to 3000 members. Ever since the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the club was conducted a month back the candidates contesting for various posts of the club were on their toes and had been campaigning aggressively as most of them feared that if the election date would be announced anytime soon.So far close to dozen candidates have made their candidature public while others are still behind the curtain and trying to strike compromise with the rival candidates and make them quit from the race and then declare their candidature. However there are others who have already started door to door campaigns and early morning meetings with the members of the club to woo them and convince them to vote for them. In addition to this the candidates have taken to social media by storm and they and their supporters are sharing their pics containing vote appeals amongst the club members on daily basis.Though there are several groups within the club which are likely to fight against each other this time but “Team Nitin Mahajan” is the only group which has opened its cards and declared its 9 candidates for different posts. TOI spoke to few of the candidates who are sweating it out in the chilling winters and busy campaign.According to CA Nitin Mahajan who is contesting elections for the most important post of general secretary, “I was elected finance secretary of the club in 2013 and 2015, my father CA Bal Mahajan too was the general secretary and vice president of the club and as a result I have vast experience when it comes to handling the affairs of the club and taking the right decisions for the betterment and development of the facilities in the club. Moreover I will bring transparency and accountability in the working of the club, along with complete family atmosphere and value for money services for the members.”According to Ram Sharma, who is contesting for the post of sports secretary “Being a true sportsman and regular in club for badminton , gym, swimming etc I am very close to the basic amenities required by members to keep them fit and healthy. If elected my priorities would be to give perfect platform to members and their family to stay fit and enjoy club sports facilities. I will also involve kids in outdoor activities as now a days they are becoming too much addicted to gadgets and gaming consoles and ignoring their fitness. Apart from this comfort and convenience for female members will be ensured in sporting activities.”According to Nishit Singhania who is contesting for the post of executive member, “Most of the members face difficulties in expressing their views in front of managing committee, but if elected I would act as a medium for such members to express their views and demands through me. I also assure the members that I will try to keep strict eye on the working of the managing committee and ensure that every decision taken by the committee is for the betterment of the club. I will also ensure speedy correspondence through email whereby members can convey their concerns and get time bound reply.”
