PATIALA: The police have registered a case of negligence against a city-based gynecologist after a pregnant woman died on alleged refusal of treatment. The complainant, Rinku, told cops that he and his wife used to visit Dr Ashu Gupta regularly when his wife was pregnant.“I approached the doctor with my wife in September 2017 when Punjab was facing curfew during dera violence. My wife was in a lot of pain, so I asked the doctor to diagnose my wife as she was nearing her delivery date,” Rinku said.“I literally had to plead before the doctor, who was adamant that my wife would not give birth before two weeks. The doctor continued to take my requests lightly by saying that both the child and mother were healthy,” he added.“I told her that may be the delivery time had come as my wife was undergoing some serious pain. I again requested for a proper checkup. Replying to my requests, the doctor said, I would need to get written permission from Government Rajendra Hospital if I wanted her to perform surgery. There was no point in wasting any more time. Hence, I took my wife to Rajendra Hospital. Doctors there performed delivery and revealed that my child had died in the mother’s womb two days ago,” the complainant told cops.“The doctors there got surprised when I told them about Dr Gupta. They said, how can she claim anymore time in delivery when the foetus was already dead in the womb. My wife had to be shifted to ICU. She succumbed five days after her delivery. Had the doctor done a thorough checkup, my wife wouldn't have died,” Rinku told the TOI.After the complaint was filed, an investigation was marked into the matter. A fourmember panel of health department was formed to investigate the matter. Now that the inquiry is over, and the doctor has been found on wrong foot, a case has been registered against her. The entire process has taken one-and-a-half year.“The statements of the accused doctor and the complainant have been recorded. The doctor is yet to be arrested,” said the investigation officer of the case.
