Deepak Thakur of Fatehgarh Sahib emerges fastest runner

PUNJAB STATE GAMESOur Sports CorrespondentLudhiana, August 22Deepak Thakur from Fatehgarh Sahib clocked 12:65 seconds to win the 100-metre sprint and was adjudged the fastest runner on the second and penultimate day of the Punjab State (U-14) Games for Boys being played here on Thursday. These games are being organised jointly by the Punjab Sports Department and the Punjab State Sports Council under the Tandrust Punjab Mission and to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Mansa overpowered Sangrur 1-0; Patiala beat Moga 2-0; Jalandhar blanked Bathinda 3-0 and Muktsar survived some anxious moments against hosts Ludhiana before clinching the cliff-hanger 1-0. Jalandhar defeated Gurdaspur 2-0, while Pathankot stunned Ludhiana in an identical fashion 2-0 to book berths in the final. Jalandhar edged out Barnala 3-0 and Mohali beat Sangrur 3-0 to secure berths in the summit clash.

Shanpreet Singh of Ludhiana took 12:80 seconds to follow him closely at the second place while Gurnishan Singh from Moga with timings of 12:92 seconds finished at third spot. These games are being organised jointly by the Punjab Sports Department and the Punjab State Sports Council under the Tandrust Punjab Mission and to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Over 300 participants are competing in different sports disciplines at various venues across the district. In football, Mansa along with Patiala, Jalandhar and Muktsar wrapped up their matches to storm into the knock-out stage. Mansa overpowered Sangrur 1-0; Patiala beat Moga 2-0; Jalandhar blanked Bathinda 3-0 and Muktsar survived some anxious moments against hosts Ludhiana before clinching the cliff-hanger 1-0. In badminton, Jalandhar and Pathankot registered victories in semifinals to set up the title clash. Jalandhar defeated Gurdaspur 2-0, while Pathankot stunned Ludhiana in an identical fashion 2-0 to book berths in the final. Likewise, in table tennis, Jalandhar and Mohali faced a little challenge from their respective opponents before winning the semifinals.
