ASSEMBLY BYPOLL Mahesh Sharma Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 7 Former Dakha legislator Harvinder Singh Phoolka is still admired as leader by several followers of the region who are availing of the facilities being provided under the banner of the Gian Sewa Trust. The trust is being run in the memory of Phoolka’s late father Onkar Singh. The enthusiasts claim that the organisation had spent more than Rs one crore on acts of philanthropy, during the last two years of its functioning. They claimed that besides preparing thousands of students for entrance exams for admissions in the medical course, the organisation had freed over 300 victims from the tentacles of drug addiction and benefited at least 75,000 residents through medical services being provided by mobile dispensary, claimed the enthusiasts. “While thumping victory during the past Assembly elections has proven that being an outsider was not a demerit, continuance of service projects shows that Phoolka still reigns hearts of masses,” said his followers led by Dr Tadbir Sandhu of Dhulkot village in Ludhiana district. Sandhu claimed that physicians, de-addiction counsellors and technicians are still providing regular services at more than 20 villages of the segment. Fully- equipped mobile dispensary caters to patients of Dhulkot, Phallewal, Jodhan and Dholan village on every Saturday. Maintaining that he had contested election from Dakha only to serve people and not for mere political gains, Phoolka claimed that he had saved hundreds of families from devastation by facilitating de-addiction of their wards, who had fallen prey to trap of drug peddlers, enjoying political patronage of self-styled leaders best known to people of the area. “Besides this, all 118 primary schools have been provided smart classes during my short tenure as legislator,” said Phoolka claiming that his family had contributed at least Rs 40 lakhs towards projects worth Rs one crore undertaken by the Gian Sewa Trust during two years.
