‘Political interference’ mars construction work in BRS Nagar

Encroachments were removed from this street a day before the announcement of Assembly election results in 2017, but the construction work is still pending. According to sources, a few people having political support don’t want that the road that leads to LIT’s three plots worth crores of rupees be constructed. The work orders for the construction of this public street was issued a few years ago, but the road is not being constructed due to “high political interference”. A few years ago, a team of LIT had visited to construct the road, but they were forced to return without getting the street constructed. When contacted, Superintending Engineer, LIT, Sukhbir Singh Jakhar said there were no encroachments on the street at present.

LIT officials allegedly threatened, asked to leave when they went there to carry out construction work Harshraj Singh Ludhiana, November 16 Even after two decades, Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has failed to construct a public street in Block A of Bhai Randhir Singh (BRS) Nagar. Encroachments were removed from this street a day before the announcement of Assembly election results in 2017, but the construction work is still pending. According to sources, a few people having political support don’t want that the road that leads to LIT’s three plots worth crores of rupees be constructed. The work orders for the construction of this public street was issued a few years ago, but the road is not being constructed due to “high political interference”. Sources said LIT officials had earlier made a few attempts to get the road carpeted, but they were allegedly threatened and asked to leave the spot. A few years ago, a team of LIT had visited to construct the road, but they were forced to return without getting the street constructed. A member of anti-encroachment monitoring committee of the MC, Col JS Brar (retired) had raised the matter of this encroached street many times before the authorities concerned. Following his complaints, encroachments were removed, but the street could not be constructed till date. Col Brar said: “An influential person and a few others want to use the street for their personal use. The street has not been constructed for more than 20 years. I have raised this issue many times in the anti-encroachment monitoring committee meetings. Not only this, no committee meeting is being organised for the past two years, as the authorities concerned have a soft corner towards encroachers. The street should be constructed at the earliest.” LIT authorities have been making similar claims for a long time that the street would be constructed soon, but to no avail. When contacted, Superintending Engineer, LIT, Sukhbir Singh Jakhar said there were no encroachments on the street at present. He claimed that the street would be constructed by the end of this month.
