‘Pig farming gaining popularity due to high demand for pork’

He laid stress on how pig farming could be a viable means for sustainable livelihood and generate employment opportunities. S K Kansal, head, Department of Veterinary Extension Education, said the university was disseminating knowledge on pig farming through printed literatures and a mobile app, which could be downloaded from Play Store. The university was also providing support to farmers through the Progressive Pig Farmers’ association, he added. A total of 74 trainees, including woman farmers, from various districts of Punjab and neighbouring states participated in the training programmes.

Ludhiana, November 18 The department of veterinary and animal husbandry, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), organised three capcity-building programmes for farmers on pig farming from October 30 to November 1, November 4 to 8, and November 13 to 15. He laid stress on how pig farming could be a viable means for sustainable livelihood and generate employment opportunities. The trainees were provided with theoretical knowledge on various topics such as breeds, feeding, shed design, vaccination protocols, disease prevention, value addition of meat and economics of pig farming etc and practical training on handling, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals/pigs, teeth cutting and castration. In the March 2020 Pashu Palan Mela, the Chief Minister Award will be awarded to progressive, rural, innovative farmers on the basis of their performance.
