One is selling at Rs 100 while the other is available for Rs 104 to Rs 105 in the wholesale market. Retailers are getting Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg margin.”Vegetable dealers said onions were coming from Nasik (Maharashtra). Meanwhile, vegetable vendors said Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg margin was not much.

Shivani Bhakoo Ludhiana, December 4 The price of onion today crossed all time high mark of Rs 120 per kg in the retail market dominated by vendors selling veggies on roads and in streets. Homemakers were in for shock as vendors told them that onions were selling at Rs 120 per kg. In the wholesale market, price of onions crossed Rs 100 per kg. Sukhvinder Singh, a vegetable dealer, said, “Two qualities of onions are available. One is selling at Rs 100 while the other is available for Rs 104 to Rs 105 in the wholesale market. Retailers are getting Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg margin.” Vegetable dealers said onions were coming from Nasik (Maharashtra). One of the wholesalers, however, said, “Few dealers have stocked onions because they know that the rate will be on higher side till the new crop arrives from the Rajasthan side.” “As there is more demand and less supply, onions are sold at higher price by a few,” the dealer added. Meanwhile, vegetable vendors said Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg margin was not much. “We leave for main mandi in the wee hours to load vegetables. A margin of Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg is nominal. We tell buyers that we are keeping this much margin only. If they wish, they can buy or leave it,” said Sita Ram, a vegetable vendor. About two months ago, the price of onion was Rs 40 per kg. Even then homemakers said onion price was on the higher side. Now, onions are sold at Rs 120 per kg, which is a shocker for homemakers. “My husband has asked me to stop using onions while preparing all vegetables. I do not use onions in dry veggies. Once the price comes down, we will use onions liberally, but till then we need to restrict ourselves,” rued Guriya, a homemaker. Though retailers were expecting onion rate to come down a month ago, nothing of that sort happened. Instead, the rate increased slowly on daily basis.
