Harshraj Singh Ludhiana, December 7 Residents of New Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar and nearby areas on Rahon Road in Ward No. 12 are a harried lot. Reason: Even after more than one year of the installation of sewer lines, the streets in these areas have not been constructed till date. The suffering residents have raised the issue before the MLA, area councillor and MC officials concerned, but to no avail. The height of sewer manhole chambers is nearly 1 feet above the road surface, causing obstruction in the movement of vehicles. Not only this, cars can’t even move in some streets. A group of residents blamed the MC authorities for failing to pay attention to the poor condition of streets. They said the newly installed sewers also remain choked. “Whenever we raise the issue, we are given assurances for early construction of streets but nothing is being done,” they said. Brij Mohan, a resident, said: “We have made requests to the elected representatives and the authorities concerned, but streets are still not being constructed. As the height of sewer chambers is above the street surface, we have not been able to drive our cars or other four-wheelers for over a year now. The streets should be constructed at the earliest.” Another resident, Sunil said: “We have been suffering a lot due to the poor condition of streets. Whenever it rains, the situation becomes worse but no authority has ever paid any attention. We appeal to the Local Bodies’ Minister to look into the matter and direct the civic body to ensure the construction of streets at the earliest.” Naresh Kumar, councillor from Ward No. 12, had earlier stated that these streets will be constructed soon. When contacted, MC’s Superintending Engineer, Parveen Singla said: “We will look into the matter and check the records.”
