Ludhiana, February 10 The Bhartiya Kisan Union, Punjab, termed the budget as “non-farmer friendly”here today. Addressing the media, union member Ajmer Singh Lakhowal said the budget announced had nothing substantial to facilitate farmers. “Nothing has been announced to curb the increasing number of suicides by farmers. Taking loans has been ‘made easier’, which may entrap farmers, as loans can add to their financial libalities,” said Lakhowal. He said, “Neither any policy has been announced to waive off their loans nor the recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee have been taken into consideration for fixing the minimum support price for the produce. No financial support has been announced for the families of the farmers who had committed suicide.” “The budget has disappointed the farming community. According to the government figures, Punjab farmers have to re-pay Rs 86,000-crore loan amount,” said he.
