City women get better of Mansa eves

BASKETBALL LEAGUE Our Sports Correspondent Ludhiana, November 17 Ludhiana warded off stiff challenge from Mansa before winning 37-28 in the women’s section on the opening day of the Senior Punjab Basketball League being held at Gureh village, near here, today. This year’s league is dedicated to the memory of Arjuna awardee, Gurdial Singh Malli, former captain of the Indian basketball team, who hailed from Gureh village. The winners were leading 21-16 at the end of the second quarter. The main architect of Ludhiana win was Gagandeep Kaur, who sank in 16 baskets to help her side script hard-fought victory. In another match in the women’s section, the Punjab Police quelled a strong challenge from Jalandhar district before romping home victors 60-57. At half time, the Punjab Police established two points lead 36-34. The main scorer for the winning side was Harminder Kaur, who contributed 20 points to play a major role in this victory. In the men’s section also, the Punjab Police came out triumphant. They defeated Jalandhar district 75-56 after leading 30-27 at the end of the second quarter. Varinder Singh played the pivot role for Punjab Police outfit chipping in with as many as 25 points. The second match in the men’s section was played between Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, and Ludhiana Basketball Academy in which the former emerged winners 82-77. Harman of RCF, Kapurthala, was the highest scorer contributing 27 points, which was the deciding factor between two sides.
