VAO awarded two-year jail term

MaduraiThe Madurai District Court on Monday sentenced a Village Administrative Officer (VAO) to two years rigorous imprisonment on graft charge. The Special Judge M.Chenkamalaselvam of the Special Court trying cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act sentenced VAO Ramiah to two years rigorous imprisonment and fined him ? 2000. However, Ramiah is said to have asked Markandeyan to pay him ?2000 as bribe in order to transfer the document. Markandeyan, a resident of Usilampatti, is said to have approached Ramiah for transferring a patta document. Ramiah was caught red handed by the DVAC police while accepting bribe.
