Mangaluru monsoon deluge: Rains relent, but people still wary

The total rainfall average for the district stood at 131.4mm.The intensity of the rain can be gauged from the fact that the district’s normal rainfall average in May is 170mm and the district received 400mm. Last year the five month rainfall average in the district was 154 mm. Mangaluru Taluk was the worst hit recording 288.5 mm in last 24 hours from 8.30am. Puttur taluk also got rains late on Tuesday afternoon recording 109mm and Bantwal recorded 122.6mm of rainfall. Sun came out for a brief moment at 9am, which was followed by a slight drizzle, which stopped within 30 minutes.

MANGALURU: Tuesday’s monsoon deluge seemed like a bad dream on Wednesday with rain abating since 2am, with the major part of the city showing no signs of the nine hours of ordeal. Thereafter, the city skies presented dull and bright sky alternatively, with clouds building up over the horizon, indicating that evening may present a rough time for Mangalureans.But in interiors, especially low lying areas, people are still coming to terms with what hit them. People lost homes and hearth, rations, sleep after their houses were water-logged and Wednesday was a busy time for them to set right things. Most of them were drawing water from inside their homes and pouring it outside. This was seen in Bejai, Pandeshwar, Jappinamogeru, Alake. Mercifully the school holiday proved to be a boon for these residents as children were also seen helping elders in the cleaning task. Residents were praying that the weather gods would hold on so that they could finish their task and get on with their life.The rainfall statistics released by Dakshina Kannada district administration showed why the situation was bad on Tuesday. Mangaluru Taluk was the worst hit recording 288.5 mm in last 24 hours from 8.30am. Panambur Weather Observatory recorded a whopping 333,8 mm in the last 24 hours, the highest in the region. Puttur taluk also got rains late on Tuesday afternoon recording 109mm and Bantwal recorded 122.6mm of rainfall. Rainfall was least in Belthangady and Sullia taluks which got 65mm and 71mm respectively. The total rainfall average for the district stood at 131.4mm.The intensity of the rain can be gauged from the fact that the district’s normal rainfall average in May is 170mm and the district received 400mm. Last year May had got a cumulative rainfall of 126mm. Even the five month normal average from January stands at 234mm and this year it was 496mm. Last year the five month rainfall average in the district was 154 mm.
