more-in After bringing out the first Beary-Kannada-English dictionary last year, Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has now moved to publish two volumes on Beary grammar. Beary is a dialect spoken by an ethnic Muslim group in parts of Karnataka and Kerala. According to the president of the academy Karambar Mohammed, it has been planned to publish a volume on the grammar completely in Beary and another with explanations in Kannada and English. The Registrar of the academy B. Chandrahasa Rai said that an advisory committee has been formed with the president of the academy as its honorary chairman. The three-member editorial team would comprise researcher B.M. Ichlangod, and writers Shamshuddin Madikeri and Abdul Rahaman Kuthethoor. They would take suggestions from scholars and writers B.A. Vivek Rai, A.V. Navada, and Padekallu Vishnu Bhat. It would be a one-year project. It has been planned to bring out the volume with explanations in Kannada and English to help non-Beary knowing persons. Mr. Mohammed said a first round meeting with experts has been conducted to take the project forward. The volume with only Beary would be of about 100 pages and the other one would have about 300 pages. The dictionary, with about 20,000 words, released last year has the original Beary word in Kannada script and an English transliteration. It is followed by the meaning of the word in Kannada and in English. It has 874 pages. The dictionary and the grammar work is expected to give additional leverage to urge the government to introduce Beary as the third optional language in schools, like Tulu, and bring back into circulation words that are forgotten. In her work ‘Beary Language’, researcher and the late Susheela P. Upadhyaya mentions that there was a belief that Beary had a script known as ‘Batte Baraha’, which is now not in use. Now Kannada script is being used. In another research work ‘Mopilla Malayalam’, the author says that the origin of Beary could be traced to the Tulu dialect. The Beary-speaking Muslims are mostly in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Mysuru, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Goa, and abroad.
