Bharat Bandh: Buses, autos damaged; shops remain closed in Mangaluru

MANGALURU: Several buses, auto rickshaws and other vehicles were damaged in the city on Monday when opposition parties observed bandh to protest rising fuel prices.Stones were pelted at long distance buses from Hubballi, Bengaluru and other places on arrival in the city. Nayak, in his complaint, has alleged that the incident happened while he was on his way to Kalladka from Bantwal. Protesters in the rally led by MLC Ivan D’Souza shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded the government to decrease fuel prices. Meanwhile, an instance of stone pelting was reported at a restaurant in the city.

An auto rickshaw driver was allegedly threatened and his vehicle was damaged at Mannagudda.Unused vehicle tyres were burnt on the street near Bendoorwell in the city and other places in the outskirts in the early morning. Meanwhile, an instance of stone pelting was reported at a restaurant in the city. Owner of the restaurant in Shivbagh has obtained the CCTV footage which shows an unidentified person pelting stones.MLC Ivan D’Souza pushes his car as protest against rising fuel prices,Buses, auto rickshaws, cabs and all commercial vehicles remained off the road. Canara Bus Owners Association (CBOA), Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners Association (DKDBOA) and Udupi Bus Owners Association (UBOA) had decided not to ply buses in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts opposing hike in diesel price.Schools, colleges and all educational institutions in the city remained closed as deputy commissioner S Sasikanth had declared holiday in view law and order situation and to prevent untoward incidents. Though many government offices and banks remained open, it functioned with skeletal strength.Sources said that miscreants have pelted stones at the car of Bantwal MLA Rajesh Nayak at Bolangadi in Bantwal taluk. Nayak, in his complaint, has alleged that the incident happened while he was on his way to Kalladka from Bantwal. BJP workers gathered in front of Bantwal police station demanding the arrest of miscreants who pelted stones at MLA’s car.Leaders of various opposition political parties held a protest rally from Hampankatta to the deputy commissioner’s in the city to mark their protest against fuel inflation. Protesters in the rally led by MLC Ivan D’Souza shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded the government to decrease fuel prices.
