Mangaluru: To tackle artificial flooding, civic officials directed to clear drains by summer

The officials are required to submit the budget estimate by the end of this month. Earlier it was used to be an open courtyard where devotees used to halt. In an oral direction issued to various entities of the government, Senthil has directed the officials concerned to submit budget estimate required for the purpose so the district administration could set aside requisite fund for the purpose beforehand. MANGALURU: Holding inefficient storm water drains as the main reason behind the artificial floods that rocked Dakshina Kannada in the rainy season this year, district deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S has directed all government departments concerned to not repeat the mistakes next year.The district deputy commissioner has directed the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and all the urban local bodies to clear drains latest by April next year. All ULBs, too, are required to hold detailed discussions with panchayat members and chalk out requirements for budget required for the purpose.Senthil also directed the MCC and ULBs to hold a Nala Clearance Week before the onset of monsoon so that the district is well prepared to handle the situation of artificial floods.Making a special mention of Bangra Kuloor area, Senthil told MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer to “learn from earlier mistakes.”Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel suggested that the civic body could borrow dredging machine from the New Mangalore Port Trust for clearing drains.This is the area where police have erected barricades.
