Proposal to rename Bejai New Road after George Fernandes mooted

“I talked to Lancelot Pinto who has seconded the proposal to rename Bejai New Road as ‘Divangatha George Fernandes Road’. “I have put forth the agenda of renaming the Bejai New Road after George Fernandes. I have mentioned in the proposal that George Fernandes is a resident of Bejai New Road and also requested the council to pass a resolution to name the road after the leader. Mangaluru: A proposal to rename Bejai New Road in the city after former defence minister late George Fernandes has been mooted by civil society and a proposal in this regard will be discussed in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council meet.In fact, George Fernandes was born and brought up in Bejai, who later rose to become a national trade union leader, statesman, socialist and Union minister. I have made this proposal since I am representing the ward, where the leader was born,” he added.

Mangaluru: A proposal to rename Bejai New Road in the city after former defence minister late George Fernandes has been mooted by civil society and a proposal in this regard will be discussed in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council meet.In fact, George Fernandes was born and brought up in Bejai, who later rose to become a national trade union leader, statesman, socialist and Union minister. Born on June 3, 1930 to John Fernandes and Alice Fernandes, George was the eldest of the family of six boys and was fondly called ‘Jerry.’Considering his contributions to the nation and being a son of Mangaluru, many of his fans and civil society have demanded that the city corporation rename the Bejai New Road, a prominent road abutting the Bejai Main Road in the city, after the leader, who died on January 29.Social activist Nigel Albuquerque sharing the views on a social media platform, said he has already spoken to Lancelot Pinto, the corporator of the ward where Bejai New Road is located. “I talked to Lancelot Pinto who has seconded the proposal to rename Bejai New Road as ‘Divangatha George Fernandes Road’. The proposal will be tabled in the upcoming MCC council for the resolution to be passed,” Nigel said.Similarly, online campaigns are being carried out by fans of George Fernandes in Mangaluru to name the road after him.Lancelot Pinto said he has already put forth an agenda seeking a resolution from the Mangaluru City Corporation council in this regard. “I have put forth the agenda of renaming the Bejai New Road after George Fernandes. I have proposed the agenda and it will be coming up in the next council meeting. I have mentioned in the proposal that George Fernandes is a resident of Bejai New Road and also requested the council to pass a resolution to name the road after the leader. I have made this proposal since I am representing the ward, where the leader was born,” he added.
