George Fernandes’s ashes to be buried in Bejai today

Mangaluru: The ashes of former defence minister George Fernandes , who was cremated, will be buried at the Bejai cemetery on Saturday.Rev Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza, parish priest, St Francis Xavier Church, Bejai, said a prayer meeting will be held at the church at 3.30 pm.“He was born in Bejai and belongs to this parish. The prayer service will last for 15 minutes after which his ashes will be buried,” Fr D’Souza said.George’s brother Michael Fernandes and labour leader from Mumbai, Felix D’ Souza, have already brought the legendary leader’s funeral ashes from Delhi to Mangaluru. A large number of clergymen led by Mangaluru diocese bishop Most Rev Peter Paul Saldanha, dignitaries from various walks of life, relatives and members from the community will be present to pay the ‘people’s man’ their last respects.Meanwhile, the Mangaluru chapter of Citizen’s Council, too, will organise a public condolence meet at T V Raman Pai Convention Center, Kodialbail, at 5 pm.
