Mangaluru: Man gets 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping niece

The 12-year-old victim, who had come to the city for summer vacation, was staying at her uncle Chandrakantha’s house.

MANGALURU: A special court handling cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the second additional sessions district court on Friday convicted a 44-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping his niece.Chandrakantha, a resident of Mangaluru, had sexually assaulted a minor, who was the daughter of his wife’s sister from Soraba in Shivamogga district. The incident took place on May 2, 2018. The 12-year-old victim, who had come to the city for summer vacation, was staying at her uncle Chandrakantha’s house. Around midnight on May 2, he had sexually assaulted the minor, and his wife had seen the act. The next day, his wife went to women’s police station in Pandeshwar and filed a complaint under 376 IPC and Pocso Act. Chandrakantha worked at various places as a part-time employee.Following the complaint, police took up the investigation and the victim was sent to medical examinations. “However when case trial started, all the witnesses, including the complainant and the victim, turned hostile,” said public prosecutor C Venkataramana Swamy. As many as eight witnesses were examined.
