Non Hindus Parking Banned in Puttur Mahalingeshwara Temple: Karnataka

  • | Monday | 30th August, 2021

The parking lot in the Puttur Mahalingeshwara Temple is only for Hindus now.

The Puttur Mahalingeshwara Temple`s administration in Karnataka`s Mangalore has picked up a controversy by banning the parking premises for non-Hindus. A board has been put up by the temple trust to reserve the parking only for Hindu devotees.

Temple authorities have defended their mover stating that the decision has been taken to reserve the parking in order to prevent any untoward incident.

As per details available, the notice put up on the paddy field that was being used as parking space has warned non-Hindus of action if their vehicle is parked in the area.

Keshav Prasad Muliya, president of the temple, was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express: “The decision has been taken by the temple committee. The Muzrai Department has been given the authority to take care of the premises. If anyone comes with a request for parking, we will consider it. The decision is also to prevent any unwanted incidents on the temple premises.”

It has been claimed that there is not enough space for parking for the devotees and the space available outside the temple was being used by people from other faith while visiting nearby markets.

Around a week back, pro-Hindu organizations had even raised the demand for banning the use of parking space by non-Hindus.

Senior Congress leader and former MLA Shakuntala Shetty has termed the decision as wrong and argued that people from other faiths too visit the temple and offer prayers to Mahalingeshwara.

She too, however, acknowledged that since the town has less public parking space, people visiting banks, markets etc in the area were using the allotted space to park their vehicles.
