more-in Responding positively to a suggestion by a citizen during the phone-in programme last month, Mayor Kavita Sanil said the Mangaluru City Corporation will open an information centre in Lalbagh within a week. Speaking after this month’s phone-in programme on Tuesday, the Mayor said that the centre would guide people on services of the corporation. It would show how to apply for a trade licence, for birth and death certificates and the like. A handbook with this information costing ?10 would be made available. She said that an agenda on opening the centre would be tabled in the meeting of the corporation council on June 29 for its approval. The handbook would be released in the council. Demand for footpath At the phone-in on Tuesday, two citizens demanded the construction of footpaths on the concrete road between Ambedkar Circle and Bunts Hostel Junction. They said that people, especially senior citizens, found it difficult to walk on the road in the absence of footpaths. The Mayor said that bids had been invited for this and the footpaths would be built. Traffic jam A caller pointed out that the traffic jam on the road between Bunts Hostel Junction and PVS Circle had become the order of the day. Parking of vehicles on both the sides of the road was adding to the problem. The corporation could widen the stretch. Ms. Sanil said that it may not be possible for the corporation to widen the stretch in view of roadside buildings. The traffic jam issue would be brought to the notice of traffic police for action. Another caller pointed out that beggars at traffic signals and junctions were increasing and should be controlled. To this, the Mayor said that the issue was out of the purview of the civic body. Rajesh, from Kadri, said that after Mallikatta Circle was widened, many were parking their vehicles on the roadside thereby causing a hindrance to movement of heavy vehicles. The Mayor assured him that the subject would be raised in the monthly meeting with the traffic police.
