BJP MLA from Noorpur, Lokendra Singh Chauhan was killed in a road accident on Wednesday morning. Officials said that the 45-year-old legislator was on his way to attend the UP investors’ summit in Lucknow when his SUV collided with a truck in Sitapur. While the MLA, his driver Sachin Kumar (32) and personal secretary Tarun Chauhan died on the spot, his two security guards, Brijesh Mishra (28) and Deepak Kumar (30), died on the way to hospital.According to police, the truck driver and cleaner fled from the spot and are yet to be traced. Shortly after the accident, Sitapur district magistrate and SP rushed to the spot. Later, the bodies of the victims were sent for postmortem.Chauhan is survived by his wife and two sons. Sources close to the Chauhan family said that the MLA attended three weddings in Bijnor on Tuesday night and started for Lucknow early on Wednesday.Considered close to chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Union home minister Rajnath Singh, Chauhan began his political career as a student leader in ABVP in 1997. With strong RSS roots, he won the Noorpur seat for his party in two consecutive state elections in 2012 and 2017.“His untimely demise is a great loss for the party. His mortal remains will be sent to his native village of Alampuri in Bijnor and the last rites will be performed on Thursday morning,” UP Panchayati Raj minister Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary told TOI.According to officials, a helipad is being prepared in his native village for scores of senior BJP leaders who are expected to attend Chauhan’s funeral on Thursday. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath expressed shock over the untimely demise of the party MLA. “Anguished by the demise of BJP MLA from Noorpur, Shri Lokendra Singh Ji due to an accident. His service towards society and role in building the BJP in UP will always be remembered. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief,” the PM tweeted.
