Cops in Muzaffarnagar thrash, force youth to mop police station floor for days after discord with family brings him there

After the fight escalated, his brother dialed 100 and sought police help.

Muzaffarnagar: Accused of picking a fight with his family, a 22-year-old man was thrashed and made to sweep and mop the floor of a police station for days by its personnel in Muzaffarnagar district, an alleged act whose video was shared widely on social media prompting senior officers to take note of it and launch a probe.Johnny (who goes by the first name) had a scuffle with his family members after which they called police to their house in Haivatpur village of the district. Johnny was picked up and brought to Charthawal police station of Muzaffarnagar, where he was forced to do menial jobs including cleaning and mopping of the station’s floor every morning.It all started when Johnny took up a fight with his mother over money. After the fight escalated, his brother dialed 100 and sought police help. Soon, a police team came and took Johnny to Charthawal station. Since then he was allegedly kept under detention and forced to do the menial jobs on the premises.On Saturday, Johnny told TOI, “I am being forced to clean the entire station by policemen. When I refuse they thrash me. It has been days now that I have been working here.”A few days later, someone took a video of Johnny mopping the floor and posted it on social media. As the news spread, superintendent of police (SP) ordered an inquiry into the matter.When asked, Charthawal police station in-charge GC Sharma said, “Some repair work is in progress in the police station, so we just asked him to do it. He will be paid. We did not force him to do the cleaning work, he is doing it on his own.”Meanwhile, SP (city) Omveer Singh said that the matter had come to his notice and he has asked for a probe into it.
