Meerut: The government in Uttar Pradesh, a state which accounts for over 16% of child marriages taking place in the country, has asked all its district probation officers (DPOs) to spread awareness about the “rampant” malpractice on a war footing.In a letter issued to all DPOs of the state, the state government has directed them to spread awareness among masses. And, this punishment is applicable on everyone attending the wedding.“Everyone who is even an invitee to such marriage is equally responsible and comes under the ambit of law because he has not informed the authorities about the illegal marriage. Now, we have been asked to create awareness so that information reaches us on time. The information can be shared on child helpline 1098, women helpline 1090 or Asha Jyoti women helpline 181,” Kumar said.On Wednesday, one such child marriage was stopped in Kharkhoda area of Meerut. The information was received by 181 helpline team.
