Meerut: A sambhar deer was spotted at Meerut’s famous Wheler Club situated in the Cantt area early on Thursday morning. The animal was first spotted by a few military personnel, who informed the forest department about the matter.“A five-year-old sambhar deer was spotted inside Wheler Club. We got to know about the incident at 8.30am and we reached there soon. A team of forest officials stayed at the spot and tried to catch it, but in vain. Initially, we thought that it escaped and got into to the jungle behind the club, but it continued to be there for hours,” said Naresh Kumar, Meerut deputy ranger.Locals gathered in the area to see the sambhar, which experts said, might have come in the human habitat in search of water.“We cannot be sure about the reason why it left its own habitat and came here. Either it came in search of water or it got lost in the jungle and landed here. Teams of forest officials stayed at the spot for hours to rescue the animal and release it into the jungle,” said Ved Prakash Jaiswal, Hapur divisional forest officer who holds the additional charge of Meerut divisional forest officer.After hours of keeping a vigil on the deer, the forest officials were able to rescue it and left it in the Hastinapur sanctuary. It should be noted that in the past, even leopards have made their way into the city and created panic among the locals.
