Meerut: Samaydeen, 55, who was brutally assaulted by a mob over cow slaughter rumors in Hapur on June 18, is battling for life at a local hospital. His brother, Mohammed Yaseen, has been by his side for the last two days. Yaseen, who got an FIR registered against unnamed attackers, on Thursday, said that his brother was assaulted for no fault of his. “He is an agricultural labourer and has nothing to do with cows or cattle slaughter. Then why was he targeted by the mob?” he asked.The incident has created communal tension in the region as the attack took place in Thakur-dominated Bajhera Khurd village, while the victims belong to the adjoining Muslim-dominated Madapur village. Tight security arrangements have been put in place to avoid any untoward incident.Meanwhile, after arresting two people a day after the incident, police have not made any further progress in the case. “Two of the accused, Rakesh and Yudhisthir Singh, were arrested. Efforts are on to identify and trace the others,” Hapur SP Sankalp Sharma said.A frenzied mob had lynched Qasim, 45, and critically injured his friend Samaydeen, over rumors of cow slaughter in Bajhera Khurd village on Monday evening. A video of the purported incident surfaced on Tuesday in which unidentified voices can be heard justifying the attack, terming it “punishment for cow slaughter”.
