MEERUT: On the lines of ' Gulabi Gang ', a social movement against domestic violence in Madhya Pradesh Meerut 's girl students have come together under the name of 'Thaali Gang'.They will beat steel plates (thaalis) outside the houses of those accused of sexual harassment, rape and other offences so as to shame them. The gang has been formed by the students of Shri Mallu Singh Arya Girls Inter College here, with an aim to teach a lesson to the accused and make efforts to stop such crimes."When a boy is born in a village, their families beat steel plates to express their happiness, but sadly India is the most unsafe country for women according to a survey. Beating steel plates outside the house of those accused in crimes against girl children will be a reminder for the locals about what their happiness for the birth of a boy has led to," said Neera Tomar, principal, Shri Mallu Singh Arya Girls Inter College, under whose guidance the 'Thaali Gang' has been formed. This comes under the social group formed in the school called 'Let Me Speak'. Having as many as 300 girl students as its members, the 'Thaali Gang' will mainly focus on crimes related to children. The gang beat thaalis at the Collectorate on Monday, to inform the authorities about their initiative."We will focus on crimes against girl children because it is ghastly to comit crimes against children. We are, in fact, getting calls from other schools in the district to include more members in the gang," said Tomar, who said the main aim was to "shame" the accused so that the crime is not repeated.A social worker, Atul Sharma, is also helping Tomar. The students also conduct street plays related to crimes against women to spread awareness about them so that the children speak up about such crimes - particularly about the abuse they face at home."We also plan to set up complaint boxes in the government schools of the district, so that girl children, who otherwise stay quiet, speak up about cases they face at home and elsewhere," added Tomar. It should be noted that in June 2016, in an attempt to make Meerut residents aware of criminals, who are repeat offenders, living in their neighbourhood and to check crime, Meerut police started an initiative called 'Bhopu Abhiyan' to announce the names and addresses of these criminals via public address systems near their homes.
