Three get life term for burning alive woman for dowry

Meerut: District sessions court of Bulandshahr on Tuesday found three members of a family guilty of burning alive a 30-year-old woman for dowry at Gesupura village and sentenced them for life besides imposing a fine of Rs 20,000 on each.According to police, the incident happened four years ago. Five days later, Aasma died.The deceased’s father, Naushad Ahmad, a resident of Akbrarpur village. Aasma, in her dying statement, had named three as accused.”

The woman, who was identified as Aasma, was married to Fareed Ahmad in 2011. Her in-laws were not happy with the dowry they had received from her family and tortured her for more.On July 21, 2014, when her husband was away, her in-laws — father in-law, mother in-law and brother in-law — caught hold of Aasma, poured kerosene on her and set her afire. Somehow her husband reached the spot and doused the flames. Five days later, Aasma died.The deceased’s father, Naushad Ahmad, a resident of Akbrarpur village. filed an FIR against the three after Fareed informed him about the crime committed by his family members.According to assistant district general counsel (ADGC) Navneet Kumar Sharma, “On Tuesday, the court of Sunil Kumar found three accused — Zubaida, victim’s mother in-law, father-in-law Nizam Ahmad and brother-in-law Mohd Sirajuddin — guilty of burning Aasma alive. Her husband Fareed Ahmad who was working in the nearby fields somehow got wind of the incident and rushed to save her. He was partially burnt in a bid to save his wife. Aasma, in her dying statement, had named three as accused.”
