MUZAFFARNAGAR: On the fifth anniversary of Muzaffarnagar riots, RLD chief and seven-term MP Ajit Singh on Saturday asked the Jats and Muslims of western UP to join hands to overthrow the BJP government in the upcoming general elections. Interestingly, Singh chose communally-sensitive Budhana town to make the appeal.Buoyed by the recent victory in Kairana bypoll, in which grand alliance candidate Tabassum Hasan had defeated BJP’s Mriganga Singh by over 55,000 votes, the RLD chief said: “Haven’t you seen Kairana results? Only united Jats, Dalits and Muslims can defeat the BJP.”Muzaffarnagar riots broke out in the months of August and September, 2013, leaving at least 60 dead and displacing over 50,000 people.The former Union minister attacked the ruling BJP alleging that it failed to provide jobs to youth after making tall promises.“BJP has done nothing in four years. It had promised jobs for youths. But, most youths are still unemployed. This government is also against farmers and poor,” Singh said.Later, the RLD leader told TOI that he was on a ‘bhaichara’ (brotherhood) campaign and not on election campaign.“It is not a campaign for elections; it is for ‘bhaichara’, to build harmony between Hindus and Muslims. I have visited dozens of districts under this campaign. And Kairana victory has proved that harmony between both the communities has been cemented. I came here to thank people of both the communities.”Speaking about grand alliance, Singh said, “Everyone wants grand alliance, and the party which will not join the alliance will be finished.” After Gorakhpur and Phoolpur loss, BJP faced its second successive defeat in bypolls after it conceded the Kairana Lok Sabha seat to grand alliance candidate in a fierce electoral battle
