She has gone back to her in-laws’ house. Two constables have been deputed for her security,” Bulandshahr SSP KB Singh told TOI.On Thursday morning, Shabnam was attacked with acid allegedly by her brother-in-law, who had been forcing her for nikah halala. The attack took place while the woman was on her way to file a police complaint after being allegedly assaulted by her in-laws on Wednesday.According to local NGO Mission Talaq Abhiyaan, which has been helping instant talaq victims, Shabnam has faced several attacks ever since she started her crusade against polygamy and nikah halala. “We had approached the local police and complained that Shabnam was being routinely harassed by her in-laws. We were supposed to meet the SSP on Thursday, when she was attacked with acid by her brother-in-law Mujahid and his aide,” said Sameena Begum from Mission Talaq Abhiyaan.Shabnam, who is originally from Delhi’s New Friends Colony area, had moved to Bulandshahr after getting married to one Muzammil in 2010. Within a year-and-a-half of her marriage, she was given triple talaq. However, Shabnam refused to accept that and approached the Supreme Court in the matter.Despite hearing the three dreaded words, Shabnam continued to stay with her in-laws at their house in Bulandshahr.A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud on Friday said it would hear the triple talaq victim’s plea on September 17. The bench also asked Ashwini Upadhyay, Shabnam’s counsel, to give a copy of her petition to additional advocate general of UP, Aishwarya Bhati.Upadhyay said that he had also written on his client’s behalf to the home ministry seeking security for her as she was facing threats to her life to coerce her to withdraw her petition challenging polygamy and nikah halala.
