Amid cow killing rumour, UP locals find cops rescuing it from pond

BIJNOR: A week after violence in Bulandshahr following alleged cow slaughter, villagers from Najibabad gathered on hearing rumours of cow slaughter in the area. The cow was grazing on the bank and slipped into the pond and started mooing. Villagers thought the sound was coming from the forest nearby and assumed somebody was slaughtering a cow. Some villagers heard a cow mooing in the nearby forest and informed police. The villagers did not go there to inspect the scene.

BIJNOR: A week after violence in Bulandshahr following alleged cow slaughter, villagers from Najibabad gathered on hearing rumours of cow slaughter in the area. The locals, however, were in for a surprise when they reached the spot where the alleged slaughter was taking place, only to find a team of policemen trying to rescue a cow from a pond Police have now warned locals of causing disturbances over unfounded rumours.According to police oficers, the incident occurred in Aman Nagar on the outskirts of Najibabad city on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Some villagers heard a cow mooing in the nearby forest and informed police. A team then rushed to the spot and found a cow trapped in a pond.Meanwhile, rumours of cow slaughter started doing the rounds and a mob gathered at the scene, only to find the police team trying to rescue the cow which had got stuck in mud and garbage in the pond.Circle officer Ajay Kumar said, “Police managed to rescue the cow and handed it over to the owner. The cow was grazing on the bank and slipped into the pond and started mooing. Villagers thought the sound was coming from the forest nearby and assumed somebody was slaughtering a cow. The villagers did not go there to inspect the scene. Police have appealed to people not to pay attention to false rumours.”Kumar added, “I have warned that strict action will be taken against those who try to spoil the peace by spreading rumours here.” Police in West UP have been on their toes since the violence in Bulandshahr and are taking cognizance of such incidents.
