Dignity for dead: UP to procure 13 hearse vans for its medical colleges

Strap: Meerut, Agra and Saharanpur Among BeneficiariesMeerut: The Uttar Pradesh government has released Rs 1.56 crore for procurement of 13 air-conditioned hearse vans for its medical colleges across the state. Meerut medical college, which had no such van to transport the dead, will also get one. The district hospital of Meerut has already three hearse vans.The decision to purchase the new hearse vans was taken to ensure that all the dead bodies are sent home with dignity. Each hearse van will cost Rs 12 lakh.Meerut, Agra, Saharanpur, Kanpur, Allahabad, Badaun and Azamgarh are among the districts which will get the specially-designed vehicles meant to carry dead bodies.“An amount of Rs 1.56 crore has been released for procurement of 13 hearse vans. Kanpur, Agra, Allahabad, Meerut, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Kannauj, Jalaun, Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, Saharanpur, Banda and Badaun medical colleges will get the vans,” read the order issued by Mukesh Kumar Meshram, secretary, UP government.The order was issued by Meshram to director general, department of medical education and training.

In the past, several instances were reported where people from unprivileged background were seen carrying dead bodies either on rickshaws, or in the some instances on shoulders. Each hearse van will cost Rs 12 lakh.Meerut, Agra, Saharanpur, Kanpur, Allahabad, Badaun and Azamgarh are among the districts which will get the specially-designed vehicles meant to carry dead bodies.“An amount of Rs 1.56 crore has been released for procurement of 13 hearse vans. Instructions have also been issued to see that the funds are utilized only for the procurement of the vans and “not misused”.“The money should be utilized according to the norms, and special care should be taken to ensure that no irregularity takes place,” read Meshram’s order.
